Snow brings more joy than you may think

in OPINION/Uncategorized by

First, I want to give my thoughts and prayers to Dr. DePerro, his family, friends and our St. Bonaventure University community. Together, we should remember him as an extraordinary leader, father, husband and friend. Thank you, Dr. DePerro.

In regards to the weather, the general public opinion has always hated the snow. A newsflash in this opinion section, if you live in Western New York, you are bound to be engulfed by snowstorms at least a few times during the winter season. If we are lucky like last April, this can also happen in the spring.

Although global warming is taking over the public’s eye on why we do not get snow in seasons other than winter, every year will not be like the blizzard of 1977.

I was not alive to experience that, but for those of you who were, please feel free to leave your experience in the comment section; I am intrigued.

With that being said, we live in a society here in Western New York where people don’t like the snow. Whether it’s driving in it or looking outside on a Monday afternoon seeing only white, it can become irritating to deal with.

Again, if you live in this area, it’s inevitable that we’re going to get snow. So why hate on it so much? If you know that we’re clearly going to go through a season of snow, why are you so surprised when it comes?

My favorite season is winter and I love the snow.

If you ask me if I like driving in it or shoveling it, I’ll probably tell you that you have four heads and are crazy. I haven’t met a single person that loves driving on unplowed roads and shoveling snow off a roof until it feels as if your back has literally snapped in half.

There are many positives to the snow.

For one, hockey season comes out and if you are like me, you break out the stick. Even if you’re uncoordinated like myself, you still love to watch and play the game.

Following that, you have snowball fights and simply going outside and playing in the snow. Build a fort and break out that Nolan Ryan arm to fire seeds at some of your best friends. Even if you don’t like snowball fights, you can build a snowman and play it off as Frosty!

For all you spring and fall lovers, I can show sympathy for you all, because those are seasons that I can deal with. Spring is full of flowers and life starting to grow back after the snow. If I’m being honest, after a long winter, spring brings the light.

Autumn is following the worst season of the year bringing sweatshirts, bonfires, pretty leaves and beauty. Also, football starts to become a staple in fall and that is such a joy.

Summer, on the other hand, is a different story.

The only two good things to come out of this season are school is not in session (although I love school) and baseball. Besides that, the weather is way too warm. It’s uncomfortable to walk around in 90 degree weather.

Summer can be your favorite season, but know that in reality, winter is superior. That is just my opinion, but I’m only trying to bring light to the season. Especially if you do live in Western New York, because snow is a staple in our weather cycle.
