Clubs have benefits for college students

One can never do enough to get involved on a college campus. I say that especially here at St. Bonaventure University, which I’m pretty sure is where almost all of my loyal readers attend.

I wrote an article a week ago preaching to my readers to go actually read and not shy away from the different articles, textbooks or actual books that our professors give us. This week, I’m here to preach to you and give my opinion on the benefits of getting involved with different activities and clubs while you’re at Bonaventure.

First, you have an immediate friend group. Although some of my best friends on campus are students that I lived with or next to freshman year, joining a club or sports team almost immediately guarantees you have a friend group. This may not be the case all of the time, but I’d say for myself, it’s good advice.

The reason for this is you’re obviously joining the club/sport or doing the activity because you have an interest in it. The person that you meet at this event also has that same interest. You two now have the same interest which, if we go back to first grade, is how friends are made.

I didn’t mean to give a “how to make a friend 101” lecture there, but that’s the main reason why it’s important to join clubs/sports or do activities here on campus. If you’re interested in going to paint night at 7 p.m. on Friday, go. You might meet a great person that shares the same interest as you and also, you get to paint all night.

This allows for students to make great memories and from prime experience, some of my best times have been hanging out with friends in clubs or at different campus events.

The second reason why it is important to join clubs and do activities here on Bonaventure’s campus is to build your resume.

I’m a student in the School of Education, yet I still write for the newspaper every week and do my radio show. These two clubs might not do anything to help me in my future of education but for one, it gives me great memories with great people and two, it helps build my resume.

There are hundreds of things you can do here on campus. I see every year at the club fair, there are multiple different diverse and awesome clubs one can join. The best part about it, you don’t have to be a freshman to join either! Get out of your comfort zone and try something you’ve never done before.

To finish, I’ll tell a quick story. The last time I played soccer was when I was two years old. I have a friend that is religiously into soccer. So, my freshman year, we decided to make an intramural soccer team. This team was made up of a bunch of kids that have never looked at a soccer ball before and one kid that probably could play collegiate soccer.

To make a long story short, we lost every game besides one where we came out on top by forfeit, but even though we lost every game by 20 goals, those experiences were so much fun. Better yet, I was able to do it with some of my best friends on campus.

My advice to you, get out of your comfort zone and be extraordinary here at Bonaventure. I know I am.
