Spring Weekend has been a tradition since the 1980s but the kickball tournament has been a part of the weekend since around 2012. Due to COVID-19, though, this Bonaventure transition had to undergo some changes.
“We set the team roster limit to 16 students max per team, in order to help with crowding on the fields. We also spread out the game times into 90-minute time slots to make sure that the teams scheduled first are off the fields by the time the next teams are checking in for their game,” said Margot Hickey, the coordinator of intramural, recreational and club sports. “We are also requiring face coverings to be worn at all times during the tournament.”
This year, 44 teams are participating and about 615 students are present with a wide range of age and skill-level. Spectators are allowed, but asked to social distance and stay away from the sidelines.
“I am very happy with the turnout! This is the first spring weekend for all of the freshmen and sophomores,” said Hickey. “I think once a lot of the freshmen and sophomores see what the tournament and the entire weekend is all about, more of them will sign up to play next year!”
Gameplay will start today at 4:30 p.m. and continue through Sunday. The championship team will be awarded a Spring Weekend sweatshirt. The second place team will receive long sleeve shirts.
“I am looking forward to seeing our students having a good time playing friendly games of kickball,” said Hickey. “No matter their skill level, I know the students always have a blast.”
