Farwell to Features, you’ve been great

BY EMILIE WEINBECK, FEATURES EDITOR

The first week of my freshman year at the annual club fair, I knew I had to find The Bona Venture table and get my name on its sign-up sheet. I started writing for the features section a week later and have never looked back. Over the past two years, I have developed a genuine passion for this newspaper and writing. It’s hard not to fall in love with the atmosphere of the newsroom, which I found on the first night I sat down as an assignment editor.

Before I go too much further, I have to shout out current Associate Editor Kathy Williams. Kathy taught me everything I know about making these pages come to life and, most importantly, gave me a new friend. She always knows how to make me laugh when I need it most during a late night and made me feel like I was doing everything right even when it was all wrong. If it was not for Kathy and all she has done for me, I do not know if I would have the same passion for the newspaper that I do today.

It is the people like Kathy who make the BV a place you want to come back to semester after semester. Even though I have decided to move on next semester to pursue different things, I will continue writing for the features section because I do not think I could just give up writing altogether or, more importantly, the people.

For just a brief moment in time, everyone that sits in the BV room on Wednesday nights makes you feel like you are escaping from reality, which is very much needed during a hectic week. There is something about sharing a laugh while doing something you love that makes you feel at home here at Bona’s. And the BV is no exception.

I also would like to give a big thank you to my Assignment Editor Kelsey Purcell. She has been an integral part of helping the pages come together in the way they do every week. Kelsey always has great attention to detail and knows the right words to say to grab the reader’s attention no matter what the story is about. I am confident that she is going to be an excellent features editor next semester and continue to create great pages every week.

I am proud to have been a part of campus media and create something that people all across campus enjoy seeing. It is also rewarding to know that alumni continue to read the paper years after they have graduated and reached out to say how much they enjoy our work.

So, I guess what I am trying to get at through all this is a big thank you to everyone who has been in the BV room the past year. You have truly made this place feel like a home to me and made me laugh on even the toughest of days. I am going to miss being around all of you every week and the atmosphere you have created in the newsroom.
