As the end of the semester approaches, students start preparing for finals. The university is offering 24-hour study spaces including access to the Friedsam Memorial Library. This is in partnership with student affairs.

“We’re excited because we open Friday morning like we normally do but then we don’t close again until the following Wednesday after finals,” said Ann Tenglund, the director of the library. “We are open some over graduation weekend because there’s still people that either want to just come in and show their families or have some last minute work that needs to be done and then we go on our regular summer schedule.”

The study spaces open besides the library include Murphy classrooms 102, 103,105 and 107, Plassmann first floor student lounge as well as rooms 109, 115 and 159, Swan’s main lobby and rooms 107, 208, 100, 103, 109, 203, 205, 209, La Verna Cafe. The spaces also include the Reilly Center, the veteran’s lounge and the Damietta Center.

“With the 24-hour spaces, I probably will stick to studying in the library unless I want a change of scenery,” said Caitlin Cullinane, a sophomore environmental studies major.

The library will open Friday, May 6 at 7 a.m. and stay open until Wednesday, May 11 at 6 p.m. Overnight, there will be a security guard on duty when library staff can not be there.

“We’re very excited about the idea and I think this is the ideal spot,” said Tenglund “Here there’s a security guard right there near the door for safety. You’ve got everything you need. There’s a computer lab, there’s printers and there’s the library pod for food.”

Some students are happy that the library offers extended hours during finals week.

“I like studying later at night,” said Nishtha Tripathi, a sophomore biology and behavioral neuroscience double major. “The longer hours will be a big help.”

Even though librarians and staff are not available overnight, Tenglund encourages students to use their 24/7 live reference chat.

“Don’t forget the librarians are here to help. We certainly can help find resources you need,” said Tenglund

Tenglund hopes students take advantage of the service but don’t jeopardize their sleep.

“It seems like it starts out at one. There’s more people, then it kind of drifts off around three or four as it should, because people do need to get sleep,” said Tenglund “Sometimes people are in here all night, but they’re sleeping part of the time.”

Tenglund also offered advice to students studying for finals or working on final projects.

“Don’t panic and don’t cram,” said Tenglund. “If you’ve got a couple of subjects you’re studying for per day, move back and forth between them. So you’re not spending like five hours on each but maybe you’re spending 25 or 30 minutes.  Don’t have your phone and social media out because of distractions.”
