The St. Bonaventure golf team competed in the VCU Shootout this week in Richmond, VA.
Although not the outcome the Bonnies expected, the shootout did have some standout moments. The Bonnies finished with a total of 878 points coming in 13th out of 14 teams.
During the rounds they had shot scores of 293, 298, and 287. Bonnies graduate, Jack Angelucci had a good showing this week with scores of 71, 70, 71 for a total of 212. He finished 28th out of the 75 players while racking up 13 birdies in the tournament.
Two freshmen were also participants in the shootout, Gabe Williams and Michael Bucko. Bucko had his best collegiate round during the third, where he shot a 2-under par of 70.
The best round from the Bonnies team this week came from graduate Erik Stauderman, where he shot an impressive 69, 3-under par. Stauderman finished the week by shooting 75 and 73 for a total of 217, tied for 49th among the individuals.
Senior Lance Sininger was not able to shoot the first two rounds due to illness, but came back for the third round and shot a 73.
The Bonnies season continues on Sept. 26th, where they host the Little Three Championship at the Bartlett Country Club.
Bucko reflected on playing his first collegiate rounds.
“At first it was scary to go to my first tournament and see other guys with the same skill level I have,” Bucko said.
He continued to say that when it was his tee time all worries and fears left his head and ‘it was just another round of golf’.
Michael also shot 2-under and had this to say, “Once I finished on my 18th hole and I found out what I shot, I was very thrilled with my score,” said Bucko. “Hard work pays off and it’ll be a time I will never forget.”
Angelucci reflected on this season being his last at the collegiate level.
“It’s definitely a feeling of mixed emotions,” Angelucci said. “I feel like a freshman in a way but at the same time knowing this is my last year of college golf is surreal.”
Angelucci is a transfer from Mercyhurst University. This is his first year playing at the D-1 level.
Jack’s father was the captain of the St. Bonaventure golf team in 1985 and he said, that makes playing here even cooler.
Angelucci kept his approach simple for the tournament.
“Keeping that one shot at a time mindset is really what’s the key to keeping yourself calm,” said Angelucci. “If you start looking too much at the big picture things can get overwhelming and that’s where trouble and doubt creep in.”
