Dear Bonaventure winter, please be kind to us

Bonaventure’s first snow Hadley Thompson / The Bonaventure thompshp20@bonaventure.edu

As I sit here writing this, drinking my hot chai latte, I am bracing myself for what is yet to come. Winter is here and it’s back with a vengeance.

The first snow at Bonaventure is always so pretty. You forget what snow looks like, so comforting yet so cold. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is all downhill from here. It starts with the temperature drop, from 50 to 30 degrees. Twenty degrees doesn’t seem like that much, but trust me– it is enough. Ripped jeans won’t cut it anymore (not that they ever did- see my previous article) and layers become your best friend.  Now I’m not a pansy when it comes to the cold, being a midwest honey and all, but Bonaventure winter is an entirely different creature.

First, it lulls you into a false sense of security. These next few weeks are going to be a 40-degree breeze. Ok, a few weeks is a bit of a stretch, but a girl can dream. The highlight of winter here at Bonaventure, so I don’t make this whole thing negative, is how pretty it is when you’re inside. But are you truly a Bonnie if you’re not nearly swept away by a snowy wind on the way to Plassmann?

So yes, it’s pretty, but pretty only gets you so far. Everything is all fine and dandy until your bones are cold and your heat doesn’t work (this is about you Devereux).

Another highlight, if I must, is that the coldest temperature we had last winter was two degrees, which isn’t in the negatives! So if Bonaventure winter can promise to keep us out of the negatives, I’m sure we can at the very least be acquaintances.

But I’m not just asking, I’m begging. Please, please, please Bonaventure winter, be kind to us. I would like to keep going to class (not that it ever gets canceled) and not have to invest in a balaclava (although they have some pretty cute ones on Urban Outfitters).

So here is to hoping and praying to Saint Bonaventure, that he will watch over us and grant us a tolerable winter. Let’s also add in a win for the Bonnies, shall we?

Now it’s time for me to be realistic. Winter is probably going to be ridiculously cold this year, but don’t worry, I’ll be ready for you Mr. polar vortex. I have three puffa jackets and I’m not afraid to wear them.
