BV, you can’t get rid of me that easily

BY CASSIDEY KAVATHAS, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

In the summer of 2020, I sat in Zoom orientation while my orientation leader, Cammie Duchess, spoke about how she was the Editor-in-Chief of The Bona Venture. As a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed freshman, I jumped on this connection and immediately emailed her begging to figure out how to get involved in the school newspaper.

That email chain lead to five semesters as apart of The BV staff and over 50 bylines. I wouldn’t trade any second of it for the world.

But now, time has gone by way faster then expected and I’m left clawing for those late nights and early mornings with this paper.  I’ve learned so much about myself, my writing and my peers at The BV. The experience has always been priceless.

The BV has a long history of highs and lows but through each one we have come out and produced a paper week by week. With minor hiccups, maybe major hiccups, we have been supported by our advisor Carole McNall, critiquers and J-School Faculty to which I’m incredibly grateful for.

Onto the long list of thank yous starting with Cammie for taking a chance on me and providing me the opportunity to become News Editor as a freshman.

To Tom Seipp and Tucker Reilly, both previous EIC’s who have supported every crazy story idea and provided moments to be off-task. Those memories of 3 a.m. nights in the newsroom continue to be my favorites with the added bonus of Tom’s singing.

To Kurt Martone and Hadley Thompson, two incredible journalists that take every challenging and somewhat controversial story and run with it. The news section wouldn’t be complete without them.

To Meghan Baehl and David Scibilia, our newest members of The BV editorial staff. Though we only had one semester together, its amazing to see how far you both have grown. David, your fish sandals are now a BV necessity.

To Jonny Walker, Kelsey Purcell and Elizabeth Egan, from lede lessons to learning indesign I’m glad we had moments in the newsroom to learn more about each other.

To Nate Solomon, don’t worry I spelled your name right this time. Thank you for being the best right-hand man from paper deliveries to copyediting woes.

Lastly to Will Poladian, who has been my biggest support system and cheerleader. Without The BV, we wouldn’t have met and he wouldn’t have the satisfaction to tell me how to spell opinion. I didn’t have to ask him this time

As I leave as Editor-in-chief, I know my time with this amazing newspaper will never be done. I came to Bonaventure dead set on doing this one thing and I’m not going to stop until I graduate. The BV has and always will be my baby.
