Full of SGA club appearances, live music, a caricature artist, and many more, the Rathskeller hosted its grand opening last Friday night.
Staff were excited to see students not only on the official grand opening, but even from the prior week as students were returning to campus from winter break.
“Seeing [the student’s] initial facial reactions when they walked in the doors seeing The Rathskeller for the very first time made me proud and excited for the students,” Associate Dean for Student Life Rob DeFazio remarked.
After opening in October of 1967, the Rathskeller quickly became a favorite hangout spot for students. In 2023, this theme will continue in full force.
“The ‘Skeller’ is an important place for students on campus because of its legacy and what it provides for students,” Iris Archer, a senior double majoring in English and adolescent education with a concentration in English, noted. “My mom graduated from Bonaventure in ‘89 so I really enjoy spending time in a place that she had so many memories in.”
Comparing the Rathskeller to other places on campus, DeFazio praised its uniqueness.
“From the gaming, to TVs, fireplace, food, bar and opportunities to bring in everything from a comedian to a band separates it from other places on campus,” DeFazio described.
The community finds itself drawn to the ping-pong tables, bubble hockey, shuffleboard, and are looking forward to the pool table.
Bonaventure students can come to the Rathskeller for the community, television, structured activities, and, of course, the food. Since the Hickey Dining Hall has changed its hours to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., when closing used to be 10 p.m., the ‘Skeller’ has become a popular late night food spot.
“Aramark worked with the Food Committee that is made up of students to help in the menu selection. DeFazio mentioned. “We have heard a lot of great feedback regarding the food so far.”
Archer agreed with this sentiment.
“I was most excited for the ‘Skeller Fries’ and they definitely delivered,” Archer commented. “The sauce is so yummy. They are great for sharing with friends, but you can also eat them yourself if you’re hungry enough.”
Students also said they noticed the addition of alcohol to the menu. Aramark already had their liquor license and Bonaventure is not a dry-campus, so students who are of age are able to buy drinks. Multiple seniors noted they appreciate the safe way Bonaventure allows their legal students to drink since they do not feel the need to drive.
Any student that is looking to rent out the Rathskeller can contact Jenna Keppel, assistant director for student activities by email at jkeppel@sbu.edu. Keppel would also appreciate any student ideas for events to be hosted in ‘the Skeller’.
