Ginny & Georgia is a Netflix comedy-drama series that came out in February 2021. It centers on two characters: Ginny, a high school sophomore, and Georgia, her mother. The second season came out on Netflix on Jan 5.
Ginny is a teenager with big feelings. She is used to moving around and never settling in one place. She watches her mom a lot and tries to not be like her. She has the habit of trying to find out all her secrets. Ginny also struggles with her mental health and so do her friends. The show is a prime example of how teenagers can be impacted by the words and actions of those around them, especially her mother. She just wants to be a normal teenager, but her family is anything but that.
Georgia had Ginny when she was 15. Now at 30, she’s slowly starting to realize that her daughter is growing up. She wants to give Ginny the best life she can. But her secrets and her past start catching up to her. Georgia has the habit of sweeping problems under the rug. She’s very independent and would rather solve problems all on her own. But that is exactly the problem. She will paste a smile on her face and act like everything is fine. Georgia would do anything for her children. Quite literally anything. She will lie, murder, steal. There is nothing Georgia wouldn’t do.
A dedicated viewer of the show, Master of Business Administration graduate student, Belinda Landou, had quite a bit to say about it.
“Ginny & Georgia is a show that is relatable to many audiences including myself,” Landou said. “I find that Georgia’s tactics can be familiar to young girls who have been through sexual harrassment by people they know. As the show continued I realized that Georgia had to be tough because of what happened to her when she was young.”
Landou’s favorite part of the show is that Georgia is able to take control of every room she walks into. She recommends the show because of the comedy aspect and she says it will have you at the edge of your seat.
“As you watch each episode, you start to develop how you think the storyline will go in your own head,” Landou said.
People that haven’t watched Ginny & Georgia may think that the show is a lot like Gilmore Girls, but it’s not. The characters themselves even mention that themselves on the show.
Ginny & Georgia touches on topics like mental health, self-harm, body image, eating disorders and so many more subjects that can take up a teenager’s life. The show gives depth to its secondary characters by including their own problems and responsibilities.
The show excels at separating Ginny’s life from her mother’s. But that doesn’t stop them from having difficult conversations as Ginny begins to uncover Georgia’s past. At one point during the show, Ginny calls Georgia a “force”. She describes her mother as taking up all the space and feeling like there is none left for her. Viewers get to witness as Ginny slowly starts to step out of the shadow of her mother.
