Anthony Goss made his way into his sports writing class early in the semester when professors started filing out of the room and congratulating him.

“I was on my way to Dr. [Denny] Wilkins’ class, and I guess they held the meeting to decide the senior awards in there,” Goss said. “Dean Chimbel walked out and he looked at me and said, ‘Anthony, congratulations. You have won the Bob Koop Award.’”

Goss, a third year sports media major who will be graduating in May, said he immediately felt pride in the fact that the work he had put in over the last three years was being recognized.

“I was just getting back into the flow of things with the new semester and being presented with this award so early on was a great experience for me,” Goss said.

During his time at Bonaventure, Goss has worked for SBU-TV and written for The Intrepid, a student-run magazine. One of his best memories was traveling with Nicolas Gelyon, a junior sports media major, to the NFL draft in Cleveland during their freshman year for SBU-TV.

Goss said that they worked long hours, barely slept and had to work outside on cold and rainy days, but that it made him realize early in his college career that he could succeed in his chosen major.

“I learned to always be prepared when traveling for a story,” Goss said. “And to never say no to an opportunity.”

Like many of the senior award recipients, Goss said he was surprised when he was informed of his award on Jan. 24. However, the reason for Goss’s surprise was that the award he received, the Koop Award given for outstanding achievement in the broadcast curriculum, was not one of the awards he had applied for.

“I look up to all of the professors in the Jandoli School and knowing they recognized and thought of me for this award made me feel like I am on the right track,” said Goss.

After graduation, he wants to work in TV and broadcast and hopefully something with sports.

Anna Bulszewicz, Wilkins, and Rick Karnath are three professors that Goss said have had the most significant impact on his time at St. Bonaventure University.

Goss said they have all helped him find opportunities, feel confident about his skills to work in the sports-broadcast industry and, most importantly, expressed belief in his ability to succeed in the industry.
