“It’s important for students to know they have a voice, and [SGA] is the voice of the students,” Katie O’Brien, the Vice President for Student Affairs said.
Elections for positions within St. Bonaventure University’s Student Government Association will take place from March 27 to March 31 through a poll located on the home screen of MySBU.
Connor Raine, a junior sports management major and incumbent SGA president, echoes the importance of listening to student voices.
“SGA is the student body’s voice,” Raine said. “We seek change on campus and ensure that all aspects of the student experience are met.”
From the fall 2022 semester to the spring 2023 semester, SGA has been responsible for a number of changes on campus.
“SGA has been working with Aramark Dining Services to improve the food [on campus],” Raine said. “We have also worked on improving library hours and students’ 24-hour study spaces for exam weeks.”
O’Brien discussed how student government brings a fresh voice on topics to create changes that benefit the student population as a whole.
“[One] of the things that came out of student government was extending the hours [of the library] during finals week,” O’Brien said. “Our students were engaged in making decisions that influenced and impacted their experience here, and student government provided that avenue to voice those concerns.”
O’Brien recommends students vote for people who they think will best carry the voice of their class or school.
“[Students] should vote [for] the same reason they want to vote for regular, local and national elections: because those are the people that are going to represent you,” O’Brien said. “Vote for someone who will carry your concerns forward, and who will be a good advocate for the student body.”
O’Brien urged students to understand the importance of a strong SGA.
“I hope that students recognize that they have a lot of ability to shape what happens [at Bonaventure],” O’Brien said. “I hope students not only run for office, but I also hope that they vote.”
