The Bona Venture – it’s been a great ride.
I came to St. Bonaventure University in fall 2020 and the campus newspaper immediately caught my eye. Within a week, I joined and I wrote my first sports article. But at that time, COVID-19 pandemic and all, I never imagined what that would turn into.
I’ve developed relationships with coaches and players. In my six semesters, I’ve written about every sport and covered some fantastic people.
I’ve been fortunate enough to cover over 50 Bonaventure men’s and women’s basketball games. I’ve covered two Atlantic 10 tournaments, the National Invitational Tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden and traveled to countless other big-time basketball venues.
When I came to Bonaventure, I expected to cover basketball. I knew I’d work my tail off to get that opportunity. However, I never anticipated becoming the editor-in-chief.
Serving as the leader of The BV has been an incredible experience. I’ve learned a ton, not just with editing, but with problem solving and management. They are skills that will benefit me greatly after I graduate from Bona’s.
But the most important aspect of my time with The BV has been the people.
To Carole McNall, our advisor – Thank you for all the help. Whether it’s our long meetings in your office or late-night email chains, I speak on behalf of the entire newspaper by expressing my gratitude for everything you’ve done for us.
To Tom Seipp – I owe you an awful lot. You gave me a chance to become the sports assignment editor my freshman year, and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Since then, you’ve become one of my best friends on campus. We’ve traveled to a pair of Super Bowls together and are always covering and calling games on TV or the radio. You seriously have no idea how much you’ve meant to me at Bonaventure, both personally and professionally, so thank you.
To Cassidey Kavathas – We’ve become very good friends because of The BV. Your someone I can always trust to edit an important story and I know you feel the same. We’ve spent so much time downstairs in the newsroom well after dark, trying to scramble and finish formatting pages or edit stories. I enjoyed working with you as your managing editor and it’s kind of crazy that we’re both now retired from the newspaper.
To Jonny Walker – I appointed you to become my managing editor and you’ve absolutely killed it. You’re going to do great next semester leading the newspaper.
To Will Poladian, Andrew Hale, David Scibilia, Meghan Baehl, Claire Fisher, Elizabeth Egan and the rest of editorial board – thanks for doing a great job all semester and putting up with me. It’s been awesome working with you all.
It’s been a pleasure writing for The BV, and who knows, maybe I’ll return for a few stories. Otherwise, thank you!
