APALACHIN, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure University golf team finished 8-under par in the Mathews Auto Collegiate Golf Invitational’s final round Sunday, tying for second place overall.
Hosted by Binghamton University, 14 schools competed in the event. Villanova University finished first, shooting 571 total, while Binghamton and the Bonnies finished second with 573.
Sophomore Michael Bucko led the Bonnies’ impressive team effort. After finishing one-under 71 in the opening round, Bucko shot a career-best five-under 67 in the final round.
The performance put Bucko at six-under total (138) and tied for fifth overall on the individual leaderboards.
Bucko’s play also landed him in the record books, tying the fifth-lowest 36-hole score in school history.
The Bonnies opened the day tied at seventh (298), but Bucko’s heroics combined with strong outings from graduate Lance Sininger, senior Jude Cummings and sophomore Caleb Decker propelled the team up the standings.
Sininger and Decker tied 13th on individual leaderboards, with Sininger shooting 74 and 70 and Decker shooting 72 and 72. Cummings shot 76, then carded one-under 71 to finish 30th.
The Bonnies return to action on Oct. 10, playing Siena College for the Murray Cup in Loudonville.
