As St. Bonaventure University expands on efforts to keep its students and faculty safe, more buildings on Bonaventure’s campus will be electronic-card accessible.

“As existing buildings are renovated or construction of new spaces added across campus we will be installing electronic card access,” said Gary Segrue, associate dean of campus security. “This is part of our on-going security plan.”

Segrue said his goal for this security plan is to have electronic card access across Bonaventure’s campus.

“It is my goal to have electronic card access on all campus facilities,” said Segrue.

Segrue remarks that this addition is due to updates to some of Bonaventure’s oldest buildings for safety reasons. The first of these buildings will be the Reilly Center.

The Reilly Center is one of Bonaventure’s most populated buildings, especially for students. The building contains athletic training rooms, a gaming center, several offices and much more.

The Reilly Center also hosts Bonaventure basketball, which averages about 15 to 4,076 people per game, according to GoBonnies.com. Segrue said that due to its capacity, it’s important to be able to lock down the Reilly Center in case of an emergency.

“The Reilly Center is one of the busiest buildings on campus and occupies up to 5,000 people during men’s basketball contests,” said Segrue. “Having the capability to lock the facility down immediately in the event of an emergency is important.

The doors to the Reilly Center were built in 1966, making them nearly 58 years old. According to Segrue, the hardware on the doors has reached its lifespan and it’s time for an update.

“The doors need to be replaced throughout,” said Segrue. “Adding electronic card access to the project makes sense.”

Updating the doors makes locking the Reilly Center down easier in emergencies.

“The addition of electronic card access to the Reilly Center provides us the ability to lock down the facility immediately in the event of an emergency,” said Segrue.

Alongside being able to provide safety for those inside the Reilly Center in case of an emergency, certain campus community members will have access to the Reilly Center during non-business hours.

The individuals in the Reilly Center during non-business hours will also be safer, according to Segrue.

“It will also allow us to provide access to authorized individuals during non-business hours and make those individuals safer when inside the building,” said Segrue.

However, the Office of Safety and Security will be the deciding factor as to who gets access after-hours.

“Safety and Security will determine which campus community members need access and at which times,” said Segrue.

Currently, there is no set time for the electronic card accessibility to be placed on the Reilly Center doors. Jared Smith, director of facilities, is working with vendors to maintain the proper materials.

“Safety and Security officials and Jared Smith are working with vendors on materials which will drive the completion timeline,” said Segrue.
