Some incoming students struggle to find employment at St. Bonaventure University, even though they said they applied to multiple on-campus jobs.
Bonaventure provides opportunities for students to have jobs on campus through a website called Handshake, which connects students with on-campus employers.
“I applied through Handshake, it was pretty simple,” said Carson Hayek, a freshman communications and sports media major. “I’m working as an assistant for the Jandoli School of Communications.”
Students agreed that the process was simple to apply, but many gave mixed reviews on getting jobs.
“The process [through Handshake] was really easy, but getting a job, I guess is not,” said Gabriella Nitti, a freshman journalism major.
Some students said they are planning on waiting for next semester to try again.
“Me and some of my friends applied too late, so we are going to try again next semester,” said Tessa Mitchell, an early childhood education major.
Many students said they felt it was too difficult to get a job. They were aware of how to apply but it seemed like a dead end.
“I feel it wasn’t voiced enough through campus on where we should go and how to actually get a job,” said Nitti.
These students who were unable to get jobs said they applied to multiple different places on campus.
“It was really difficult for me because I applied to eight jobs on Handshake, but no one got back to me,” said Casey Reed, a freshman adolescent education major.
Some students have applied for jobs through Handshake, but have not gotten employed or given reasons for being declined.
“I applied to five or six places on campus,” said Nitti. “Only two of them got back to me saying I didn’t get the job, and I applied back at the end of July.”
However, some students said they were able to get jobs after getting declined through Handshake.
“After applying to all these jobs back in August I ended up going to the library and asking to work, they told me they were full,” said Reed. “Thankfully I was fortunate enough to get a job in the University Ministries, as an office assistant. It’s really fun so far, I’m doing different jobs every day.”
Nitti said she is looking into going off-campus to work.
