Now through Nov. 19, Jandoli Women in Communication will collect pads and tampons of all sizes for the Cattaraugus County School District. The idea was born in September during a meeting.
“I met with the co-presidents, Ellie Foley and Claire Fisher, to discuss this semester’s service project. When we presented [Put a Period on it] to JWIC as a group, we had a great response and I knew this was the perfect time for the project,” said Alexis Serio, a sophomore Communication, Social Justice and Advocacy double major.
The club’s mission is to empower and uplift women, and by holding this event, they hope to spark new discussions, according to Serio.
“[We hope schools] see the power of their students being equipped and empowered when they no longer have to worry about finding a period product to get them through the day,” said Serio.
The Cattaraugus School District was chosen because of its connection with Bonaventure students through the student teaching program. JWICs’ desire to donate to Cattaraugus came from their experiences and community knowledge. It can be difficult for young individuals to receive period products, according to Serio.
“We want young people with periods to feel comfortable and confident attending school,” said Serio. “No one should have to feel shameful for experiencing a normal bodily function. When you have access to the necessary products, you have an easier time learning and focusing on your academic and social life.”
Individuals can donate products in the purple boxes labeled “period,” “pad,” and “tampon.” The boxes are in Murphy Hall, Doyle Hall, the Reilly Center and the University Ministries building.
“The Bonaventure community has been quite receptive,” said Serio. “I’m hoping this project will increase conversations about the reality of having a period and not always having access to the products you need.”
