During his 20 years in the United States Army, Master Sgt. Francisco “Frank” Morales fought in Afghanistan and served in challenging regions of the world.
This is why New York State Senator George M. Borello nominated Morales for the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.
During a Nov. 1 ceremony in Doyle conference center at St. Bonaventure University, Bernard Valento, vice president for Enrollment, spoke about Morales’s character and said that he is truly deserving of his awards.
“Frank does not boast about his 20 years in the United States Army, his five deployments and all the accolades he has received,” said Valento. “Instead, what’s most important to him is the relationships he’s built with his fellow soldiers, and with individuals throughout his communities today.”
Jeff Gingerich, university president, agreed.
“Frank has truly modeled a lifetime of selfless service to his family, his community, his country, service to his God and to his fellow human beings,” said Gingerich. “We especially value Frank’s service to our university. To provide such great service and leadership with a humble heart, as Frank does, is especially fitting for our Franciscan mission.”
Brigadier General Arthur G. Austin, Jr. spoke highly about Morales, as his longtime friend and fellow member of the U.S. Military.
“Don’t ever let others’ perceptions and fears get in the way of reality and fact,” said Austin. “My friend, and battle buddy, Frank Morales, embodies this.”
Borello describes the many reasons that Morales deserves this honor, including his bravery overseas.
“Defending freedom is a tremendous responsibility,” said Borello. “There are those whose contributions are at such a magnitude that they deserve special recognition. Retired U.S. Army Master Sgt. Frank Morales belongs in this extraordinary group.”
After the official state induction ceremony last May, Morales said he felt as though the ceremony on campus was a big deal. The recognition on campus was more special because he celebrated with his friends and family.
“In May, I went to Albany to receive this award. When I was there, it didn’t feel like a big deal to me because I didn’t have my friends and family, or the Bonnies,” said Morales. “To be able to get this award in front of my peers, the vets that I help out with and the students that I know and the softball team that I help coach makes it much more special. This award represents the Bonnies. It means a lot that I get it here.”
