Three St. Bonaventure runners prepare for the biggest race of the year, the NCAA Northeast Regional in Hopkinton, New Hampshire on Nov. 15th.
Sophomore William McCarthy joins Juniors Aiden Scattergood and Casey Malloy to compete.
McCarthy said he looks forward to his first time competing in this race.
“The work we have done throughout the season will be the main factor to our success,” said McCarthy. “We are looking to fine-tune ourselves over the next week and a half.”
Scattergood said he is focused on finding balance to help him succeed in the race.
“We started with a little bit of downtime after A-10s,” said Scattergood, “I gave that race physically and mentally all I could possibly give it. So, some much-needed recovery happened after that.”
Following recovery, Scattergood plans to work on pacing to prepare for the added distance.
“Now it’s just workouts preparing you to get ready for that extra 2K at the end of the race,” said Scattergood, “And really focusing in on how that race pace feels because this is my second ever 10K.”
Scattergood, who as a sophomore broke the existing SBU 10K record at the Northeast Regional, said he feels prepared and confident heading into regionals on Nov. 15.
“My team and I are in great shape right now and having that fitness gives us so much confidence,” said Scattergood.
McCarthy, like Scattergood, said he feels prepared for this moment and he has been working towards this race all season long.
“I’d like to take in the experience and use the great fitness I’ve built the whole season to the best of my ability on a big stage such as this,” said McCarthy.
All three Bonnies runners who qualified have been top finishers for the team throughout the whole fall season.
Scattergood spoke on his mindset leading up to the race. He isn’t looking to change much but will be ready to face some of the best competition in the country, Scattergood said.
“My mindset before races is always the same,” said Scattergood. “Go out and give it your all no matter what the circumstances. But that being said, we are racing the NCAA champ and some of the best teams in the country and I’m blessed to share the stage with them.”
Bonaventure will compete against many of the top-ranked teams in the Northeast Region, headlined by No. 1 Syracuse and No. 2 Iona.
McCarthy thanked his teammates around him for the success he has seen this season.
“My teammates and training partners are the main reason for my success, having guys to push me every day has made this season competitive and fun,” said McCarthy.
Scattergood said he credits his success to faith and the people around him.
“First and always first is God,” Scattergood said. “Obviously, my coaches, Coach MacFarlane and Coach Lonzi who I cannot thank enough. And my team for always supporting and believing in me. And my family for always showing up to my races.”
The Bonnies will compete in the Northeast Regionals in Hopkinton, New Hampshire on Friday, Nov. 15. The time for this race is yet to be announced.
