The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team fell to Youngstown State University 60-52 last night at the Beegly Center in Ohio.
The Bonnies (1-1, 0-0 A-10) stumbled out of the gate, quickly falling into a 10-point deficit to the Penguins (2-0, 0-0 A-10), one they were unable to overcome.
“We got to understand the mindset we have to have to start a game, especially on the road,” said Bonaventure head coach Jim Crowley.
The Bonnies shot 28% from the field for a combined 16-57.
“I really thought we just took some shots outside of our comfort zone,” said Crowley.
Redshirt senior Dani Haskell had a team-leading 24 points and seven rebounds in the loss, the second-most points she has scored in her time at Bonaventure.
Redshirt senior Isabellah Middleton and freshman Mackenzie Pettinelli logged over 30 minutes of game action for the Bonnies. Middleton shot 29% from the field, logging 15 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman Lena Walz made her collegiate debut, scoring two points with two rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
“Frankly, I expect more out of everyone,” said Crowley. “I just didn’t think we played well.”
Youngstown shot 38% from the field. Graduate student Malia Magestro led the Penguins with 15 points, scoring her 1,000th career point tonight.
The Bonnies held Youngstown to 27% shooting from the 3-point line.
The Bonnies gave up 17 turnovers which resulted in 26 points for Youngstown.
“It’s a focus thing, it’s a pressing thing,” said Crowley.
Crowley said he feels the team needs to improve its mentality before its game on Saturday in order to get the win versus Bowling Green State University.
The Bonnies will face the Falcons on the road on Saturday. Tipoff from the Stroh Center is set for 12:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
