The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team is looking to get back in the win column as they head to Bowling Green to play the Falcons Saturday at noon.
On Tuesday night, the Bonnies traveled to Youngstown State University to play the Penguins in a non-conference game. The Bonnies stayed close, but the Penguins eventually pulled away for the 60-52 win.
Women’s basketball head coach Jim Crowley said his team needs to make better choices when they have the ball.
“I thought we took way too many contested shots Tuesday at Youngstown,” said Crowley. “We’ve got to get better with that.”
Crowley said that the key to success on defense is limiting Bowling Green fifth-year forward Erika Porter, averaging eight points per game while shooting 42% from the field. Crowley said a key to doing this is going to be playing well in the paint and limiting second-chance points.
Crowley said that he expects Bowling Green to come out quickly while coming off back-to-back losses.
“They have a great atmosphere there,” said Crowley. “We’ve got to be ready, especially really early, for them to be really flying high and going at us.”
Crowley said that his team forced turnovers against Youngstown State, but they didn’t convert them into points.
“We forced a similar number of turnovers on Tuesday, but did not convert them as well,” Crowley said.
Crowley mentioned that grad student Payton Fields and freshman Zoe Shaw need to stay consistent on the court.
“We need Payton Fields to have a little bit of a better game,” Crowley said. “We need Zoe Shaw to find her consistency as a young player,”.
Crowley also mentioned that the bench needs to play better and they need to contribute more.
“We did a great job against Binghamton of getting some great play out of our bench, not as much against Youngstown,” said Crowley.
Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+.
