With the St. Bonaventure hockey season about halfway done, players look back on the first half of the season and what to improve on moving forward.

In the team’s most recent game, the Bonnies defeated the Cornell Big Red 4-0, putting their record to 6-2. Senior forward and captain Owen Hughes said that the team has played well, but that there are still things to improve on as the season progresses.

“As much as I think we have played pretty well up to this point in the season, I think that we could improve on playing a full 60 minutes, as we have struggled to do that,” said Hughes.

Hughes also mentioned injuries as an issue the team has dealt with throughout the season, but he said he is happy with the way players have stepped up in response.

Sophomore defenseman and captain, Miles Brown, spoke on how the team needs to stay consistent and keep their intensity throughout the full 60 minutes on the ice.

“Throughout the past few games — especially against Binghamton and Cortland — a major takeaway is consistency,” said Brown. “Often, we start the game very well but as the third period comes, we start to decrease the intensity which is something we cannot do.”

Senior captain and forward Samuel Cichowski, who won player of the game in their shutout win over Cornell, said that the team has been moving the puck well. He said they need to continue to improve its transition game but noticed that the team has gotten too comfortable and shied away from their hardworking playstyle.

All of these players have made memories. Hughes and Cichowski’s favorite memory was defeating rival Niagara University 2-1

Brown said that his favorite moment so far this season was defeating RIT 7-0.

“Due to them being in the ACHA, which is another league of hockey, many counted us out,” said Brown.  “Being able to prove people wrong through a 7-0 win sends a statement to everyone in the country.”

Brown is very excited about what the rest of the season has to hold and said he believes the Bonnies will put the rest of the nation on notice.

“I’m excited to build more memories with this team,” Brown said. “One of them, winning a national championship in Jacksonville this spring.”
