The St. Bonaventure University women’s basketball defeated Little Three rival Canisius University on the road 66-63 tonight at the Koessler Athletic Center
The Bonnies continued with the same starting lineup from its first three games- fifth year guards Payton Fields, Dani Haskell and Isabellah Middleton and freshmen guards Mackenzie Pettinelli and Zoe Shaw.
The game started with a back and forth first quarter that Canisius managed to pull a lead away, having a 22-17 advantage heading into the second quarter.
The Bonnies started the second quarter by bridging the gap down to 22-24, but the Griffins responded quickly with a 12-point run on the Bonnies, who only managed to score seven points in the second quarter.
The Bonnies left the floor down 24-36 at halftime. The Golden Griffins outrebounded the Bonnies 41-26 at the break.
Bonaventure’s head coach Jim Crowley said he wants to see his team play more aggressive in getting to the paint and grabbing boards.
“There were a number of times where we got the stop we wanted and we watched,” said Crowley said. “We’re just not putting the body we need to.”
Crowley also mentioned his team needed to move the ball and shoot more efficiently in that first half, especially on open shots.
“Offensively, we settle for open shot without playing touches,” said Crowley. “They may be open, but we just shoot them at a very poor clip.”
Isabellah Middleton brought the Bonnies back to within one in the third, scoring nine points in the quarter, while also stealing the ball three times.
In the fourth, Dani Haskell scored 12 of her game-high 29 points.
Crowley said her fourth quarter performance was the shots that completely changed the game.
Crowley touched on what it meant to Haskell beating her former team in their arena.
“Obviously, it’s got a little more sweetness to it,” said Crowley. “I’m sure for Dani, she’s just happy we got the win.”
St. Bonaventure returns to the Reilly Center to take on Colgate this Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
