The St. Bonaventure cross country team’s season wrapped up this past week at the northeast regionals in Hopkinton, New Hampshire

The team posted top 10 overall finishes in every race leading up to the Atlantic 10 Championship.

Their best finish came at the Aubrey Schenk Invitational where they finished third out of 20 teams.

“The greatest challenge I faced was while running at our meet in Gettysburg,” said Malloy. “Just 300 meters into the race I had gotten spiked in the back of my heel causing me to trip.  When I got back up, I was in dead last, but I still finished the race. At the end of the race, I realized I had huge gashes on my legs and had to get stitches.”

Fellow junior Aiden Scattergood also had various injuries that he had to push through during the season. He talked about the work he has put in throughout the season that has helped him to improve his times.

“I knew the work I put in and kind of pushed past all of that,” said Scattergood. “It is just mental steadiness and perseverance that my coaches help me so much with.”

Scattergood also acknowledged the team’s improvement “I would have to give a big shout-out to Will McCarthy, Casey Malloy and Josh Lopez,” said Scattergood. “Those guys battled hard this season and from the outside you just simply see results and times. But I am so proud of the behind the scenes work these guys put in.”

Sophomore William McCarthy talked about his excitement toward the improvement the team made, and what it means for next season.

“We made a lot of long strides development-wise, and it sets us up for a big year next year and I’m excited for it,” said McCarthy.

Malloy expressed his positivity toward the team’s improvement  throughout the season.

“The team had steady improvement overall throughout the year and the times showed,” said Malloy. “I attribute that to our hard work and consistency during training weeks.”

Despite the adversity and challenges that occurred during the season, the runners reminisced on some of their favorite memories and moments that took place.

“My favorite memory this past season was honestly the Aubrey Shenk Invitational at Gettysburg,” said Scattergood. “I got injured during the race but watching my teammates perform there to a caliber we have never seen got me so excited for the future of this program at Bonaventure.”

McCarthy said he enjoyed the bonds the team made with each other on their overnight trips.

“My favorite memory of the season is probably our overnight trips,” said Malloy. The team had a lot of great bonding moments during those.”

The Bonnies head into the offseason with 10 months to prepare for next season.
