At St. Bonaventure University there are plans in place to address a wide selection of emergencies.
“The university is prepared to respond to a wide array of emergencies, both natural and man-made,” said Gary Segrue, associate dean for campus safety.
The most common emergencies in the last decade at Bonaventure have been power outages, said Segrue.
One power outage occurred in November of 2023 on campus affecting Gardens East, West and Townhouses 31 through 33, displacing residents to Doyle Hall and nearby hotels.
“Regardless of type of emergency, communication with the campus community is key,” said Segrue. “The campus community will be advised as to what is occurring and the best way to react.”
Campus resources can ask students to avoid certain areas in the event of an emergency, Segrue said.
“We may ask the campus community to avoid a certain area, to shelter in place or evacuate to another location,” said Segrue.
There are multiple different methods to communicate to campus community members, according to Segrue.
“[Our campus has] an Alertus outdoor speaker array system strategically placed across campus, e2Campus text message alerts, blast notice board email, banners across lobby digital displays, office and classroom phone alerts and alerts sent to university computers,” said Segrue.
Bonaventure hires staff to implement safety procedures for the well-being of students, staff and faculty on campus, said Segrue.
“On our campus, we now have Mr. Christoper Baker on our staff,” said Segrue. “Mr. Baker is the former Police Chief in the Village of Allegany and current Emergency Management Coordinator for Cattaraugus County.”
