Coming off the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up to finish the indoor regular season, the St. Bonaventure men’s track team will look to make some noise at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championships.
Sophomore Brendan Chapple set the school record for the indoor 1000 meters in the A-10 Championships with a run of 2:28.98. Chapple also broke the school’s 800-meter record with a time of 1:55.93 earlier this season at the SPIRE Midwest Open.
“My personal approach the week leading into a conference championship is to get all the little things right and control the controllables,” said Chapple. “Making sure I’m getting proper sleep, eating good food and hydrating. My personal goal for the A-10’s is to make the 1,000-meter final. Bonaventure hasn’t had someone score at our conference meet yet, so to be half a second off the final last year is something that I’ve been thinking about all year in preparation.”
Junior Aiden Scattergood moved into Bonaventure’s all-time top 10 among mile runners with a run of 4:26.20 at the A-10 Championships. In the 800 meters, he posted the second-fastest individual time in school history as a freshman at the A-10 Championships.
“My personal approach towards the A-10 meet has always been to keep it simple,” said Scattergood. “Not trying to do anything special that I haven’t been doing all season. Nothing good happens from trying something new a week before a championship race. My personal goals for the meet are to podium, try to be top 10 in the A-10 and hopefully go below 4:10 in the mile.”
Scattergood broke the Bonnies’ all-time mile record with a time of 4:15.35 at the YSU Mid-Major Invite earlier this season, beating Brendan Chapple’s time of 4:17.94. Before Chapple broke the record as a freshman last year, it was the oldest standing school record held by Gus Moore with a time of 4:19.6 in 1927.
Earlier this season at the Houghton December Classic, junior Christian Figueroa broke the school’s 200-meter record, finishing in 23.12. He also ran a personal best of 51.77 in the 400, finishing second in school history.
At the SPIRE Midwest Open, senior Clay Peets broke the school’s 3000-meter record with a time of 8:23.47 and won the event. Junior Ethan Luce broke the school’s 5000-meter record with a time of 15:39.62. Casey Malloy finished right behind him with a time of 15:39.80, also breaking the existing record.
At the YSU Mid-Major Invite, sophomore Henry Morris finished with a time of 1:08.10 in the 500 meters, which is also a school best.
The A-10 Championships will be held Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
