Coming off a 19th-place finish at the Ross Collegiate Classic to start their spring schedule, the Bonnies placed 11th out of 13 teams at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate Mar. 25 in Williamsburg, VA.
The team shot 297 in round one, 300 in round two and 299 in round three to shoot a total of 896.
Junior Michael Bucko shot 222, the best among the team, over three rounds. Bucko averaged 72.9 in six events last fall. He finished tied for 10th in a field of 104 players at the Matthews Auto Invitational and shot 73 in The Murray Cup, finishing fifth.
Graduate student Peter Byrne shot 224 and held the team’s best score of one-over-par in round one. Byrne averaged 75.1 in six fall events. He shot 73-76 in two rounds at the Little Three Championship, finishing ninth.
After battling back from four-over-par to shoot one-over-par in the first round, Byrne felt he left a few shots on the course.
“Going into the tournament, I tried to use prior experience at the course to lead me through my rounds this week,” said Byrne. “I was pleased with my first-round performance. As for the other two rounds, I left shots out there and made silly mistakes that cost me from shooting a good score. All in all, there are still things to work on before the next event.”
Junior Caleb Decker shot 228, tying Bucko for the team’s best score of three-over-par in the third round. He averaged 77 in five fall events and shot 70 in the second round of the Little Three Championship, finishing tied for seventh.
Shooting nine birdies and an eagle at the event, Decker took positives away from his performance.
“A lot of good came from this tournament,” said Decker. “It was my first start in the lineup since September after coming off an injury, so it felt great to be back in the action. I drove the ball well, which is definitely a positive. I need to clean up the big numbers and be better on the greens. Making more pars will be a big focus over the next few weeks.”
Freshman Braddock Damore shot 229. Averaging 74.8 in six fall events, he shot 74-74 in two rounds at the Little Three Championship, tying for seventh. Damore shot a career-low round of 69 and made a career-high eight birdies in the final round at the Kilmarlic Intercollegiate.
Junior Gabe Williams shot 231. He averaged 74.9 in five fall events and shot a career-low score of 66 in The Murray Cup to earn medalist honors. At the Matthew Auto Invitational, Williams shot 72-72 in two rounds, finishing tied for 10th.
The Bonnies season continues at Green Valley Country Club’s Drexel Match Play Monday, April 7, in Lafayette Hill, PA.
