Earlier this week, a St. Bonaventure University international student had their academic visa revoked by the federal government, according to today’s university announcement.

The university was not formally notified of the revocation nor given a reason as to why the visa was revoked.

“Many offices at the university, including the President’s Office, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, International Student Services, Athletics, University Ministries and Finance and Administration are coordinating efforts to assist any student who might be impacted and provide any resource available to guide them,” wrote Jeff Gingerich, university president, in the emailed notice. “We will also consult with our legal counsel to gain a better understanding of how we can advocate for our students.”

Gingerich indicated that the university will continue to uphold its Franciscan values of compassion, wisdom and integrity even though the university is obligated to abide by federal directives.

“Our mission clearly states: “St. Bonaventure embraces students, faculty and staff of all faiths and cultures and strives to bring out the best in every individual through meaningful relationships,” wrote Gingerich. “We will stay true to our Catholic and Franciscan values. It is important, now more than ever, to continue to embrace members of our community who may be experiencing apprehension about decisions put forth or proposed that may significantly impact their lives.”

The university’s international student population has steadily grown from 47 in 2020 to 105 in 2024, according to the university fact book.
